Carnaval is an annual festival organized by the Brazilian Association to celebrate in Calgary the greatest cultural celebration all across Brazil. it is officially set based in the religious calendar as the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, starting on Friday of the previous week.
It is celebrated with different regional cultural expressions such as the samba schools in the South, traditionally in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and ‘trio elétricos’ in the Northeastern Brazil as for instance in Salvador with the Axé music and in Pernambuco with the Big Paper Matchê Dolls and the musical rhythm called ‘frevo’.
In Calgary it usually takes place one or more weeks after the official celebration in Brazil.
